The crash took place in Dutchess County around 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 6 in the town of Dover on Weil Road.
According to Capt. John Watterson of the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, a preliminary investigation revealed that the two bikes, both operated by juvenile males, were traveling in opposite directions on Weil Road when they crashed head-on with each other.
As a result, both suffered serious injuries and were airlifted from the scene to Danbury Hospital in Connecticut, from which one was transferred to Westchester Medical Center and the other to Hartford Children’s Hospital.
"At this time the two operators are conscious and alert," Watterson said.
Their identities are being withheld due to their ages, he added.
The investigation is being conducted by members of the Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau and Crash Investigation Unit.
"At this time the primary factor in the crash appears to be a failure to keep right on the part of one of the operators," Watterson said.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the J.H. Ketcham Hose Company.
